Getting ready for a big move into your new home? Then you are probably already dreading some of the aspects of getting everything packed up and shipped out. But if you are really not looking forward to the process, then you are probably contemplating if it would just be easier to put it all off on a long distance moving company. Here are some things you have to take into consideration before you make such a big decision.
What are you paying for?
The big thing to remember when you are hiring movers is that you are paying for time. The longer they are working on the job, the higher your bill is going to be. If you want to go the route of a professional moving company, then you’re going to have to consider just how much work you need done. There are really three tiers of expenses to consider:
- Most Expensive—Having the movers pack all of your belongings, load the truck, drive the truck, and unload the truck;
- Mid-Range—Pack your belongings and then have the movers load them on the truck, drive the truck, and unload your belongings; and
- Least Expensive—Pack your belongings, rent the truck yourself instead of using the movers’ truck, and then have the carry your stuff for you.
How much do you have?
Since the cost is based on how long it takes to move you, the simple rule of thumb is the more you have, the more it will cost. If you have a lot of belongings, the move will cost you more. If you can, eliminate as much as possible by donating some items, throwing out others, and having a yard sale to get rid of even more. If there is a lot of stuff in your home that you don’t need and you are considering professional movers, you will save money by getting rid of these items pre-move.
How valuable are your belongings?
Insurance is another issue you need to consider. If you have a lot of precious valuables such as fine china or expensive electronics, then you will probably want to invest in the insurance option. But this is going to cost you more, so consider wisely.
How far are you moving?
A cross-country move is going to be expensive. There’s just no way around it. Some companies will charge by the hour, however, others will charge by the pound on long-distance moves. The key here is to shop around and see what rates you can get so that you can make an educated choice about your options. Also, if you are moving out of or into a large city, expect to pay more than for a small town. Some moving companies in cities have been found to charge as much as $20 an hour more for their services.
When is the big day?
Moving in the summer is a lot more convenient. The kids are out of school, the weather tends to be better, and you can usually schedule vacation time easier. However, the same holds true for everyone else that is moving. Summer months are considered peak moving times and, as such, moving companies tend to charge more for this period.
